Welcome to SBRA!
On behalf of our members, I'd like to invite you to join us this year on a variety of rides and activities. As Long Island's largest bicycling club we offer something for every cyclist. Our membership of over 800 riders spans the entire range of cycling interests and abilities. Whether you're just getting into cycling or are a seasoned rider, you'll find kindred spirits within the club. Our goal is to provide enjoyable rides, a safe and friendly environment, and an assortment of social activities.
The 'backbone' of the club is the Monthly Ride Schedule. Here you will find listed an extensive variety of rides, open to both members and non-members. Newer or less experienced riders usually begin with a "D" Ride. Here, experienced ride leaders will assist you in beginning your adventure into club bike riding. "D" Rides are shorter in mileage and travel at a slower pace, with frequent rest stops to regroup, socialize and enjoy the scenery. All you must do is bring your bike in good repair, a helmet, a spare tube or patch kit, some water, and an enthusiastic attitude. Experienced riders who prefer longer rides and a faster pace can try the "B" or "C" level rides. For those interested in very challenging rides, there are "A" and "AA" rides. Several rides are offered every Saturday and Sunday, as well as weekday evenings during daylight savings months. In addition, especially during the winter months, off-road mountain bike rides are scheduled.
SBRA sponsors several annual events. Most notable is our Bike-Boat-Bike, held on the first Sunday in June. In the past, we have hosted close to 1000 riders, who enjoy scenic touring of the East End of Long Island, including the north fork and Shelter Island. Our Annual SBRA Picnic held in July. Ride in the morning and join us for a Great Barbeque later. The Montauk Century Ride is held in June. This is our traditional 100-mile ride from Babylon to Montauk. Don't let the thought of riding 100 miles scare you, just come out in March and join in on the weekly training rides. We have even added a Metric Century. It's a great way to meet other club members and get in shape for the riding season to come. We kick off our season with Super Cycling Saturday in March where we have education on safety, basic bicycle repair instruction from our Bike shop partners and Ride Leader training for our aspiring Ride Leaders.
In addition, we have the annual picnic, Halloween Ride, Hampton Maid Ride and several "off-island" events, including the Seagull Century, The Tri-State Seacoast Century, the Five Boroughs Ride in NYC and many others (See photos). In short, there are plenty of bike riding opportunities of every sort for everyone.
You are cordially invited to attend our monthly meetings, held at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of each month at the New Village Community Center, located on Wireless Road in Centereach (See map). Meetings usually feature a guest speaker in addition to socializing, discussion of upcoming club activities, and of course, refreshments. Please come to a meeting and talk with other riders. Let them know you are new to riding with SBRA and they will be happy to tell you more about our club and how to easily particpate on rides. Annual club dues (electronic membership) are $40 per person. Membership entitles you to receive our web based monthly newsletter "Rolling Wheels" listing all news and activities, and to participate in all club activities.
